Eight of the 10 best drivers in the 2017 FIA Formula 3 European Championship season and a total of 14 drivers who competed in the series, this year, are going to also contest the FIA Formula 3 World Cup, held in mid-November in Macau. Drivers such as the champion, Lando Norris (Carlin), and the vice-champion, Joel Eriksson (Motopark with VEB) will be part of the prestigious event.
The Macau GP – that was granted the FIA Formula 3 World Cup status, in 2016 – has been one of the most important Formula 3 races for many years and offers the drivers that usually race in different Formula 3 series the opportunity to battle it out with one another at Macau’s challenging street circuit. Furthermore, the race in the former Portuguese colony traditionally represents the finale of the Formula 3 season worldwide.
The entry list of this year’s Macau Formula 3 GP features more than a dozen 2017 FIA Formula 3 European Championship drivers. Lando Norris, the 2017 rookie who won the European Championship title right away, would love to conclude his F3 days by winning the Macau GP. But quite a number of drivers – among them Joel Eriksson, Maximilian Günther (SJM Theodore Racing by Prema) and Callum Ilott (SJM Theodore Racing by Prema), his toughest opponents in the 2017 FIA Formula 3 European Championship season – will be determined to prevent another victory of the 17-year-old Briton. They all want to defeat Norris to pay him back for the past season.
During their trip to the South China Sea, the four aforementioned drivers will be accompanied by another four young guns that made it to the top 10 in the 2017 FIA Formula 3 European Championship: Jehan Daruvala (Carlin), Ferdinand Habsburg (Carlin), Guanyu Zhou (SJM Theodore Racing by Prema) and Ralf Aron (Van Amersfoort Racing).
In addition, the British Carlin squad, that won the 2016 Macau GP courtesy of Portugal’s António Félix da Costa, relies on the services of Sacha Fenestraz and Devlin DeFrancesco who also contested FIA Formula 3 European Championship races, this year. Meanwhile, the four-driver line up of Team SJM Theodore Racing by Prema will be completed by rookie Mick Schumacher.
Motopark with VEB will be represented – in addition to Eriksson – by Tadasuke Makino, Marino Sato, Daniel Ticktum and Sérgio Sette Câmara. The two last-mentioned drivers already gathered FIA Formula 3 European Championship experiences and also contested the 2016 Macau GP. There, the Brazilian Sette Câmara delivered in particularly fine style to finish third behind António Félix da Costa and Felix Rosenqvist.
At the same time, Van Amersfoort Racing will travel to Asia with the pairing Ralf Aron and Pedro Piquet. In 2016, Piquet was able to secure a top 10 finish with the Dutch team in the event held not far away from Hong Kong.In the Macau GP, the FIA Formula 3 European Championship drivers will have to battle it out with other F3 stars such as Kenta Yamashita (B-Max Racing Team), the 2016 Japanese F3 Champion.
