This year’s DTM Young Driver Tests, held a week after the season finale, were contested at the Lausitzring – inter alia, by Maximilian Günther (Prema Powerteam), Joel Eriksson (Motopark) and Ferdinand Habsburg (Carlin).
For Maximilian Günther, driving a DTM car didn’t represent a new experience as he was test and reserve driver for the Mercedes-AMG DTM Team throughout the 2017 season. In the Lausitz region, the 20-year old who also was involved in the 2016 DTM Young Driver Tests was offered the next chance of demonstrating his skills in the cockpit of a DTM car – and convinced once again. “Maximilian delivered in more than remarkable style,” said Mercedes-AMG DTM Team Principal Ulrich Fritz. “He quickly re-familiarised himself with the AMG C 63 DTM and provided the engineers with very good feedback. It’s always great to witness young drivers gathering their first experience with a DTM car to then improve test by test.”
Günther who finished third in the 2017 FIA Formula 3 European Championship also was happy with his achievements. “We worked a lot on the car’s setup on both days, conducted different tests and I drove both long-runs and qualifying simulations,” the German said after the tests. “Several times I really went for it and I think that I set good lap times while doing so. I think that the progress I’m making in the DTM car is getting bigger and bigger.”
In addition to Günther, Joel Eriksson and Ferdinand Habsburg also represented the FIA Formula 3 EC drivers during the three days of testing. For Eriksson, the 2017 FIA F3 European Vice-Champion, it also wasn’t the first outing in a DTM car. The Swede has been promoted by BMW since 2016 and at the Lausitzring he drove a BMW M4 DTM. For Habsburg, however, driving a DTM car represented virgin soil. He tested an Audi RS5 DTM, in the YDT. Despite partly wet conditions, representing a special challenge for the young drivers, all three young drivers also demonstrated their skills at the wheel of a DTM car.
Now, the trio is entering the hot preparation phase for the FIA Formula 3 World Cup, held in mid-November in Macau. In the final and most important F3 race of the season worldwide, they once again want to shine with great results.
