Carlin’s Lando Norris wins FIA Formula 2 season opener

This Saturday in Bahrain, Lando Norris, the reigning FIA Formula 3 European Champion, secured his maiden FIA Formula 2 win. And courtesy of his team-mate Sérgio Sette Câmara, Team Carlin that also contests the 2018 FIA Formula 3 European Championship season even celebrated a one-two.

By setting the fastest lap time in the qualifying session, Lando Norris who is supported by the McLaren F1 Team demonstrated early that he would be one of the favourites in the race.  And indeed: the Carlin ace took the lead from his pole position and prior to the obligatory pit stop he opened a 10-second gap on his fastest chasers that battled it out with one another. A short time later, when all the drivers had come in for their stop Norris was back in the lead.  Afterwards he controlled the race and after 31 laps he crossed the line as race winner, thus celebrating his first win in the FIA Formula 2 – and as icing on the cake he also set the fastest race lap. In the thrilling closing stages of the race, Norris’ team-mate, Sérgio Sette Câmara, prevailed in the battle for the runner-up position, thus also making it to the podium.

“I feel very good after that race – it was a great way to start the season and especially with a 1-2 for the team, it’s even better,” Norris said after his victory. “The start today was great, and I felt comfortable in the first stint on the medium tyres. So far, it’s been good with everything we’ve done as a team, we’ve got to keep the consistency up there and look for another great start tomorrow in the Sprint Race. We know what we have to do tomorrow, and even though I don’t have a clear track ahead of me like today I’ll be aiming to overtake and get more good points.”
