By signing 17-year old Arjun Maini, Van Amersfoort Racing has completed their driver trio for the 2015 FIA Formula 3 European Championship season. The Indian finished runner-up in the 2014 British BRDC Formula 4, with the only one able to beat him in the battle for the title being George Russell, his team-mate last year. Russell also advanced to the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, for the 2015 season.
“I’m proud of making my FIA Formula 3 European Championship debut for such an experienced team as Van Amersfoort Racing,” Maini beamed after having signed the deal with the Dutch squad that secured ten race wins courtesy of Max Verstappen, last year. “I hope I will be able to learn a lot from them.” Team Principal Frits van Amersfoort also is delighted. “We are happy to have another young, greedy talent racing for our team. In the off-season tests he thrilled us with his natural speed and in the Toyota Racing Series, he once again confirmed this impression by securing five podiums.”
For Maini, 2015 will be his third year in single-seater racing. In 2013, he was Vice-Champion in India’s JK Tyre Racing Series and in 2014, he repeated this success in the British BRDC Formula 4. In January and February 2015 he competed in New Zealand’s Toyota Racing Series against some of his future Formula 3 rivals, won two races and finished fourth in the championship. Nonetheless, he celebrated his first major success far earlier: in 2011, by winning the ‘One from a Billion hunt’ – a competition announced by the Force India Formula 1 Team to find India’s biggest motor-racing hope.
